My dancers love a challenge. I would prefer to sign them up for Intermediate rather that Beginning. Is that okay? No dancer will be allowed to take Intermediate who has not taken one year of beginning unless the teacher recommends it. All our classes are progressive. Advanced classes are by teacher placement only. Dancers stay in Intermediate until the teacher feels they are ready for the next level.
What is the Performing Company? Our Company consists of five groups: Juniors (age 8-9), Elite (age 9-13), and Sr. Edition/Senior (teen groups). They are required to take between seven and 11 classes per week. They compete in regional and local competitions and perform locally and in all the CVDA Concerts. They also perform annually at a Portland Trailblazer halftime show. The performing company is by invitation only. We add dancers who are ready every May. There are extra costs associated with this group including competition fees. Dancers who are interested should contact Miss Holly.
What should I look for in a dance studio? Any dance studio without a professional dance floor should be avoided because your dancer will get hurt. Look for a studio with a wide variety of teachers, classes and levels. A studio with a performing company will probably have a higher level of dancers and instruction in all classes. Look for organization and professionalism. Look for a studio with qualified instructors. A studio that doesn’t advertise the qualifications of its instructors might have instructors without qualifications. Look for studios that emphasize a positive environment.
How often is your studio cleaned? The bathrooms and common areas are straightened every day and cleaned once a week. Our dance floors are scrubbed and treated with liquid rosin once a week to provide a less slippery dance surface. Our dance floors are dry mopped every single night.
How strict are you about the age for classes? Extremely. Dancers must be in the correct category. Although your dancer may be able to handle a class with older dancers, most teens do not want to take class with an eight year old.
What if my 3-5 year old child refuses to dance on the first day of class? You are certainly welcome to take the class with them the first two class times. However, we don’t allow anyone to sit in the room and watch. (Too distracting.)
Why is the Spring Concert so close to Memorial Day Weekend? The week preceding Memorial Weekend is the only time Bauman is available to us.
My daughter didn’t get moved up to the level she wanted. Do you have any suggestions? The best way to improve quickly is to take private lessons. They are available on a one-time or weekly basis. They can be set up with the teacher. Lessons are usually $25 a half hour and can be paid to the teacher directly at the time of class.
Do you formally evaluate your dancers and why? You will receive an evaluation of your dancer’s progress written by all their teachers. Included are areas of strength, areas that need improvement, and a recommendation for future placement. Of course, we are available any time during the year for verbal evaluation. We evaluate such areas as dance skills, class etiquette, and any other area that we feel needs extra attention for improvement or outstanding recognition. The evaluations are a great tool for growth and for encouragement. Upon graduation, dancers receive an additional bound copy of all their evaluations.
What is your wait list policy? Class limits are based on the age of the class, the opinion of the teacher, the style of dance and the size of the studio in which the class will be held. Our classes fill up quickly. Every year, we start the first day with wait lists for certain classes. Registration is first come, first serve. We will do what we can to accommodate everyone, but we won’t sacrifice the quality of the class. Every class has a limit. However, the limits are different based on the factors listed above. If you are wait-listed for a class, the office will call to let you know. If a space becomes available and you are next on the wait list, we will contact you immediately and prorate your tuition for any missed classes.
